Format

This tournament will be open to all students who are in grades 4 to 7 in the 2016-2017 school year (i.e. students graduating from elementary this year and entering high school in September are allowed to participate).

This tournament will use Canadian National Debate Format (CNDF) with 5 minute speeches and 30 seconds protected time for all rounds. All participants will be emailed a guide on CNDF prior to the tournament. That said, resources on CNDF are widely available online, and we encourage debaters to familiarize themselves as best they can prior to the confirmation email.

All rounds of this tournament will use one of two different debate topics:

  • Topic #1: This House would ban all cars from cities
  • Topic #2: This House would allow treasure hunters to keep historical artifacts they find

The first two rounds of debate will use topic #1, the second two rounds will use topic #2. The elimination rounds will use one or the other based on what the team that wins a coin-flip chooses. Teams will be randomly given sides the day-of the tournament and therefore must be prepared to debate both sides of both topics. Electronics will not be allowed, printed cases only.

Registration

All teams should register through this form. Registration will open Saturday April 29th and close 11:59 pm Saturday May 27th (which is one week before the tournament). Teams must be prepared to register both partners’ full names and their school names, judges’ names with contact info, parent contact info, and dietary restrictions of the attendees. There are no school team caps or restrictions on partnering from different schools (i.e. hybrid teams are allowed).

Payment will be collected the day-of the tournament – please bring cash or cheques (cheques should be made payable to “Garion Hicks”). Teams which have not paid by the end of registration in the morning will not be allowed to compete. If you wish to pay in-advance, or have any other questions, feel free to message ubc.est.2017@gmail.com

Dropping

If a team registers for the tournament but discovers they cannot attend for whatever reason, they must inform as soon as possible. The UBC Debate Society reserves the right to disallow students from participating in future events if they register and fail to show up without informing us.

Judging

All teams are obligated to bring 1 judge for every 2 teams. If you are only bringing 1 team, you must bring 1 judge. Without enough judges the tournament cannot run on time. To be a judge at this tournament all someone needs is a) fluency in the English language, and b) to be 13 years or older (high school students with some debate experience can judge).

Meals

We will provide meals for debaters, judges, and coaches, including breakfast and lunch. Vegetarian options will be available, and we will do our best to accommodate other dietary restrictions or provide a discount on registration provided that we are made aware of them.
