North American Women’s Debating Championships 2017
The UBC Debate Society secured the bid to host the North American Women and Gender Minorities Debating Championships this year, after a vote by 22 institutions around the continent. We are excited to welcome participants from all debating societies around North America, as well as all members of the UBC community (including those who have never debated before!).
Why a women and gender minorities tournament?
Debate as an activity develops skills that are useful for students in any academic discipline because it fosters:
- Engagement with ideas and perspectives using intellectual rigour
- Logical analysis of arguments and refutation
- Communication skills and persuasiveness
Women and other non-male identifying individuals have been systemically underrepresented in debate, which is seen as part of the male domain. We hope this tournament will provide a welcoming space to learn and compete, as well as promote debating among all individuals by showing them how fulfilling – and fun! – it can be.
Debating is open to all those who do not identify as male.
What if you’ve never debated before?
If you have never debated before, don’t worry – there will be a training session on Friday night (March 17th) to teach you all you need to know! Debate topics range widely, but will be accessible to those from all educational backgrounds as they do not require knowledge beyond the scope of relatively informed university students.
All are welcome to choose to judge at the tournament, or attend the final. The tournament final will occur at 3PM on Sunday, March 19th, 2017 at the UBC Alumni Centre in the Jack Poole Hall. All are invited to come watch some of the best intervarsity debaters in North America!
