We are pleased to extend to you an invitation to the inaugural UBC Debate Society Summer High School Tournament. We are excited to offer an unparalleled competitive and educational experience for new and seasoned debaters alike. Key details and dates for the tournament are listed below:
Tournament Dates: Saturday, August 6th and Sunday, August 7th
Location: UBC Main Campus
Registration Fee: $150 per team
Registration Fee with Qualified Judge: $80 per team (see “Judging” section below)
Registration Dates: Opens June 1st and closes July 25th
There will be a single category for all debaters unless there are enough applicants to warrant the creation of separate Senior and Junior categories.
This tournament will be in British Parliamentary (BP) style using five minute speeches. A written guide to BP style debate will be provided by email prior to the tournament and experienced UBC debaters will also present a briefing on the format before the first round of debate.
There will be three impromptu rounds on Saturday. Judges will be instructed to only provide positive and constructive feedback to debaters this day and all adjudications will be closed. Between debate rounds we will host presentations on various elements of debate from experienced, WUDC-competitive UBC debaters and alumni.
On Sunday there will be two impromptu rounds, followed by an impromptu semi-final and final. During this day there will be a greater emphasis on competition. Judges will be instructed to reveal adjudications and provide both positive and critical feedback to debaters. We will also host a training session and open discussion among the debaters immediately following, and on a topic related to, the first impromptu round of the day.

We will contact you after registration to solicit debater names, team pairings, judge names and dietary restrictions of attendees, which must be provided by August 1st.
Each school must pay the registration fees of $150 or $80 per team either in cash or as a cheque made payable to “Garion Hicks.” All registration fees must be paid by August 1st. Fees should be sent to:

This tournament strives to provide the highest possible quality judging to debaters who attend. All judges are paid, university-level debaters who are required to pass a rigorous selection process. Any institution attending this tournament that can supply a volunteer judge of sufficient quality to one of our judges will have two of their teams’ registration reduced to $80 per team. The adjudication team reserves the right to reject any judge applicants who they deem to not meet the judging standard of the tournament. Other volunteers and spectators are welcome but will not affect the judging of debate rounds. For more information, you may contact the Tournament Director at email@example.com.

Volunteer judge applicants will be contacted individually to be vetted by the Chief Adjudicator of the tournament. Schools are encouraged to submit more than one volunteer judge application.
We will provide meals for debaters, judges and coaches, including breakfast and lunch on both days. Vegetarian options will be available, and we will do our best to accommodate other dietary restrictions or provide a discount on registration provided that we are made aware of them.
